Trawling the ocean can lead to destruction of the ocean floor a dragger sweeps up whatever is in its path and destroys what it can't pick up draggers usually fish the sandy part of the ocean, that's a source of food and shelter for lots of animal and they get killed in the in the process or there homes are destroyed. Commercial draggers use wire, nets, cages, baskets and fishing lines to catch fish, should there be only one way to catch these fish or should there be a bunch of methods like there are today. Is there something we can do it make this better, or is it fine the way it is?

I agree with you jordan, trawling the ocean does lead to construction of the ocean floor. But what types of fish or sea creatures are affected the most by this?
ReplyDeleteAny animal can be harmer by the dragger but it's mostly skate, lobster, crab, or any bottom feeder thats in the wrong place at the wrong time, and plant life such and coral or sea anemones.
ReplyDeleteAre you saying all trawls are bad or just the ground fishing trawls?
ReplyDeleteI agree this is harmful to the ocean floor, are they're any ways to drag fish without demolishing the floor that still as effective at catching?
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of fish do they usually catch?
ReplyDeleteI think all fishing methods should be permitted, but maybe with additional laws. If drag fishing is destroying habitats, there could be certain areas where drag fishing is prohibited.
ReplyDeleteJordan, when you say that these trawls can destroy the ocean floor, is it possible that these trawls can have such a large impact as increasing the rate the natural oil seeps through the ocean floor by destroying the floor?
ReplyDeleteJordan, is their any other material that would make it less harmful to the ocean floor?
ReplyDeleteThe floor of the ocean is a vital part to an ocean ecosystem. Many plants and animals call the floor of the ocean their home. If it is destroyed, it could possibly have devastating effects to the whole ecosystem. What are some ways that fishing could be done in a similar way, while maintaining a healthy ocean floor?
ReplyDeleteMeryl,
ReplyDeletethose are called conservation zones, places where they can not drag for fish.
Robbie,
ReplyDeleteI think the only way thats possible is is a dragger runs over a sealed over drilling area and rips of the seal which seems unlikely but possible, I don't think the dragger has enough of an effect to dig up oil that hasn't been drilled yet because it's to far down.
Do they have certain areas that are closed off for drag fishing that fish can go without being harmed?
ReplyDeleteEleana and brendan,
ReplyDeleteI think thats the bigger concern at this time because something has got to change. sadly there is nothing right now, but with new fishing methods there could be in the next year or two.
Is trawling even legal if it causes so much damage?
ReplyDeleteYes trawling is legal
ReplyDeleteIs there any way we can make this different?
